UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is organising a trade mission for UK companies that wish to explore and access business opportunities in South Korea for the 2018 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games, and the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympic & Paralympic Games in Japan.
As with all major sports events, the organisers require a wide range of goods and services and all interested companies are invited to join this mission. With venues either planned, under construction or existing ones being used, the organising committees are looking ahead to fit-out and overlay. In addition, there is still an appetite for HR/volunteering, marketing and advisory services, including on event delivery itself; this is especially true for Pyeongchang, where thinking is turning to their opening and closing ceremonies. As ever, security is a priority for major events, with transport planning remaining important for Tokyo 2020.
South Korea, 6th-7th July
This is our first sports mission to South Korea since March 2014, since when the appointment of Chairman Cho has accelerated delivery and prompted an increasing appetite for international expertise at the Pyeongchang Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (POCOG). The mission will visit both Pyeongchang and Seoul.
Japan, 8th-10th July
This mission follows our first to Japan last November. Since then, Tokyo 2020 has submitted its masterplan to the IOC, which means delivery can begin in earnest. The focus of the masterplan was a move to existing and temporary venues, although plans for the new Olympic stadium in central Tokyo remain. Events have also moved on for the organisers of the Japan Rugby World Cup. In February, they announced the 12 cities that will host matches in 2019 and plan a number of promotional activities in the UK during the 2015 World Cup. Once that tournament is over, the spotlight will move to Japan.
